How to choose the right walking shoes

Why it's important

Your feet take 10,000 steps a day. That's millions of steps a year. Unsuitable footwear = pain, blisters, injuries.

Essential criteria

Cushioning

The most important. Every step has an impact. Good cushioning protects your joints (ankles, knees, hips).

Support

The shoe must hold the foot without compressing it. Not too wide, not too tight.

Flexibility

The sole should bend at the toe. Test in store: bend the shoe. If it's too resistant, walk away.

Breathability

Your feet sweat. A shoe that doesn't breathe = moisture = blisters.

Shoe types

City sneakers

  • For: everyday walking, flat surfaces
  • Advantages: lightweight, versatile
  • Cons: less support, quick wear

Walking shoes

  • For: regular walking, long distances
  • Advantages: good cushioning, durable
  • Disadvantages: less elegant

Hiking shoes

  • For: varied terrain, denivele
  • Advantages: excellent support, all-terrain
  • Cons: heavy, warm

How to try

  1. Try at the end of the day (swollen feet)
  2. With your usual socks.
  3. Walk around the store (not just stand)
  4. Check the space in front of your toes (1cm minimum)

Budget

  • Mid-range: 50-80 euros (sufficient for beginners)
  • Mid-range: 80-150 euros (good compromise)
  • High-end: 150+ euros (if you walk a lot)

When to change them

  • Every 800-1000 km
  • When the cushioning is crushed
  • When pain appears

Your feet (and your Nevomon) will thank you!
