Pedometers and calories: How are they calculated?
Your pedometer shows calories burned, but where does this figure come from? We explain how it's calculated and how to optimize it.
Calculating calories while walking
The basic formula is simple:
Calories = Weight (kg) x Distance (km) x 0.9.
But each app has its own adjustments.
Factors that influence
Your weight
The more you weigh, the more you burn. Logic: moving 90 kg requires more energy than moving 60 kg.
Your speed
Slow walking (4 km/h): ~3 cal/min
Fast walking (6 km/h): ~5 cal/min
The terrain
Uphill = more calories. Flat = standard. Downhill = less.
Why apps give different figures
Each app uses slightly different formulas. Some overestimate to please you. Others are more conservative.
NevoMove uses realistic estimates based on Apple health data. No inflated figures.
Figures to remember
- 1 step** = approx. 0.04-0.05 calories
- 10,000 steps** = 400-500 calories
- 1 hour's walking** = 200-300 calories
NevoMove displays your calories
On the NevoMove home screen, you see in real time :
- Your daily steps
- Estimated calories
- Distance covered
All without any configuration. The app does the math for you.
The real secret
Calories are great. But what really counts is regularite.
100 calories a day for 1 year = 36,500 calories = about 5 kg of fat.
And that's where NevoMove comes in: the daily quests and Nevomon encourage you to walk every day. The magic of small cumulative efforts.
